Admissions

Applications for admission to the Department of Health Policy and Management are processed through the Office of Student Affairs at Pitt Public Health. You must apply for the MPH, JD/MPH, MS, and PhD programs through SOPHAS, the centralized application service for graduate schools of public health. Please note, SOPHAS submits applications to Pitt Public Health only after all required materials are received. Applicants who have submitted applications may track their status online.

All applicants are required to submit the general statement and objectives requested in the application. A writing sample is also required from MS and PhD applicants. Interviews are typically required as part of the application review process.

Applicants for the MHA and MHA/MBA programs only may apply through SOPHAS or HAMPCAS. Learn more www.hampcas.org

Review the Pitt Public Health requirements for admission before applying.

Acceptable undergraduate training includes the following:

MHA and MHA/MBA Applicants
  • minimum of three credits in college-level mathematics (algebra or higher) or statistics
  • minimum of six credits in the social and behavioral sciences, preferably with at least one course in economics
  • GRE scores are not a required component for the MHA application. For those students who feel that their past academic performance and/or prior work history do not adequately represent their skill set (or strength of their application), the GRE may be submitted for additional consideration.  A strong test score can help offset the lack of industry experience and/or previous academic success.
MPH and JD/MPH Applicants
  • minimum of three credits in college level mathematics (algebra or higher) or statistics
  • minimum of six credits in the social and behavioral sciences, preferably with at least one course in economics
  • GRE scores are optional for MPH applicants and LSAT scores are optional for the MPH portion of the JD/MPH application
MS Applicants
  • QPA of 3.0 of higher (undergraduate degree)
  • undergraduate or graduate calculus with a 3.0 or higher
  • GRE scores are not a required component for the MS application. Applicants who feel that their past academic performance and/or prior work history do not adequately represent their skill set may submit GRE scores for consideration

It is recommended that applicants have completed coursework in statistics, economics, and another social science.

PhD Applicants
  • QPA of 3.3 of higher (master’s degree not required)
  • undergraduate or graduate calculus with a 3.0 or higher
  • GRE scores are not a required component for the PhD application. Applicants who feel that their past academic performance and/or prior work history do not adequately represent their skill set may submit GRE scores for consideration

International Applicants

In addition to the application materials required of all students, international students must submit an official score report from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or the Duolingo English Test and a WES evaluation.

International Applicants

Review by departmental committees takes an average of four to six weeks. As soon as an application is returned to the Office of Student Affairs, the applicant will be notified of the admissions committee’s decision.

Visiting Campus

Prospective applicants wanting to visit the Pittsburgh campus and learn more about our HPM programs, please contact Jessica Dornin or Dr. Kevin Broom.

Please note: For any applicants who want to meet with current HPM students, the best day to visit the department is Friday because our students will not have class conflicts. However, we can accommodate visitors on other days if needed.

For all interested prospective applicants, we will be holding an Open House in November 2024, during the fall semester. If you have not applied yet, consider attending our Open House or contact us to meet with us directly.

For accepted applicants planning to visit, please contact the department for set visit days or to schedule an alternative.
