Prepare Yourself for a Competitive Job Market
The Pitt Public Health Mentor Network on Pitt Commons is an online platform designed to provide mentorship opportunities for current students, recent grads, and alumni within the Pitt Public Health community. Alumni mentors can provide invaluable support and guidance to students as they navigate their careers.
Current students and recent graduates may contact mentors through this platform to request a resume review, discuss strategies for networking, or simply conduct an informational interview with them about their career path. We recommend that you select a mentor whose profession most closely matches your own career goals.
How it Works
- Sign into Pitt Commons using your Pitt credentials and complete a profile. You may also choose to import information from LinkedIn. This should only take 10 to 15 minutes.
- Students may participate as mentees. Alumni may participate as a mentor, mentee, or both at the same time.
- Students and alumni can search for and request a mentor who best matches their career interests.
- Alumni mentors may either accept or decline a mentorship request.
- Once mutually established, the mentor-mentee pair then agree on communication preferences, including whether they’ll speak by phone or meet in person and how often they’ll connect, whether it's once or multiple times throughout the year.
In your request, we suggest introducing yourself and suggesting a few areas in which you need guidance (e.g. informational interview, resume review, networking, job search strategies). It is best to ask about the mentor’s availability (and not assume a large time commitment) to provide guidance in person, over the phone, or over email. Be courteous about time and be willing to accommodate the mentor’s schedule as much as is possible.
