Nancy Glynn: One of 20 People to Know in Health Care

Nancy W. Glynn, associate professor and director of master’s degree programs in the Department of Epidemiology, was selected to the Pittsburgh Business Times' list of 20 People to Know in Health Care, part of their quarterly 20 People to Know series. The series is meant to connect the Pittsburgh business community with influential businesspeople working in key industries.

The 20 People to Know in Health Care list, published on Feb. 2, includes health care and life science executives and educators who work at local health systems, biotech companies, insurers, universities and health care-focused nonprofits.

Asked by Ethan Lott of the Pittsburgh Business Times what she is most proud of accomplishing during her career, Glynn spoke about the development of the Pittsburgh Fatigability Scale, which she pioneered and validated in 2011. The 10-item scale is self-administered and assesses whole-body physical and mental tiredness related to activity in adults aged 60 and older. It has become the gold standard measurement of older adults’ perception of physical and mental fatigue related to activities of varying intensity and duration and has been translated into 18 languages.

Glynn is similarly passionate about the Department of Epidemiology, from which she graduated with a doctoral degree in 1994. More recently, she was honored with the school's Alumni Award for Teaching and Dissemination.

“I am so fortunate to be able to engage daily with prospective students around the world and share the experiences and opportunities afforded with being an epidemiology student at Pitt Public Health," she says. "I am so proud of our students thriving academically and in their post-graduate endeavors, and I am honored to advise them along their path towards a career as an epidemiologist.”
