Preceptor Information

Before and During the Internship

  • Review the placement approval form, goals, and objectives with the student and sign. Retain a copy for your records.
  • Orient the student to the agency. Ideally, orientation would include an introduction to the mission of the organization/project and to the staff, a review of expectations, and development of a reporting/meeting schedule to review progress and answer questions.
  • Provide direct supervision, establish an ongoing reporting relationship, and maintain availability to provide feedback and resolve issues that may arise with the student during the internship.
  • Offer resources necessary to a successful internship, including work space, supplies, and the opportunity to observe major agency functions.
  • Discuss the student’s progress with the student's faculty advisor at least once during the internship via email, telephone or site visit. These discussions will inform faculty decisions about a student's grade.
