How to Apply

Applications for admission to the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health are processed through Pitt Public Health’s office of student affairs. You must apply for the MS, MPH, PHP, and PhD programs through SOPHAS, the centralized application service for graduate schools of public health. Please note, SOPHAS submits applications to Pitt Public Health only after all required materials are received. Applicants who have submitted applications may track their status online.

Acceptable undergraduate training for the MS and PhD includes:

  • a bachelor’s degree in the physical, chemical, or biological sciences with at least a 3.0 grade-point average overall and in the basic sciences;
  • previous courses in organic chemistry, biology, physics, and calculus would be useful; and
  • the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional.

Acceptable undergraduate training for the MPH and PHP includes...

  • a bachelor’s degree in the physical, chemical, or biological sciences with at least a 3.0 grade-point average overall and in the basic sciences;
  • the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is optional.

International Applicants

In addition to the application materials required of all students, international students must submit an official score report from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) exam, or the Duolingo English Test and a WES evaluation. A minimum TOEFL score of 80 on the Internet test is required for all foreign students. The minimum acceptable score on the IELTS is Band 6.5, and applicants must take the academic writing and reading modules of the test. The minimum acceptable score on the Duolingo English Test is 105.
