MPH Public Health Genetics Program Admissions
The MPH Public Health Genetics Program admits students on a rolling basis based on academics, activities and experiences, personal statement and letters of recommendation. We embrace diversity and welcome motivated applicants with backgrounds in diverse fields. As one of only two MPH Public Health Genetics Programs in the country, we seek local, national, and international students interested in leading the way in the cutting edge field of public health genetics.
Admission Requirements
- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a discipline relevant to public health, biology and/or genetics or must have substantial knowledge of a discipline relevant to public health gained either through study or experience.
- Applicants are not required to submit General Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores as a part of the application.
- Six college credits in behavioral and/or social sciences (with a C or better).
- Three college credits in mathematics or statistics (with a C or better).
- An introductory course in genetics is required; other college level coursework in biology may be considered to fulfill this requirement on a case-by-case basis. Coursework in biochemistry and calculus is helpful but not required.

Application Process
Applications are considered year round, although most students matriculate in the fall term, which matches the intended sequence of course offerings. Admissions are made on a rolling basis, and we strive to communicate admissions decisions to applicants in a timely manner. There is no formal interview process. Applicants wishing to visit the department in person or gain further information via phone are encouraged to contact the MPH Public Health Genetics Program Directors to set up an appointment or attend the annual Pitt Public Health Open House Event.

Applicants applying to the Dual Degree MPH Public Health Genetics/MS Genetic Counseling degree must apply through SOPHAS Express. Personal Statement
Applicants should use the personal statement as an opportunity to discuss their interest in public health genetics and how they envision applying their education in the MPH Public Health Genetics Program to their future career goals. The personal statement should highlight an applicant’s strengths, previous experiences, and understanding of the growing field of public health genetics.
