Program Curriculum
The genetic counseling program curriculum supports the development of practice-based competencies in genetic counseling. Most course work is completed in the first academic year. The coursework has been carefully developed to provide courses in the general content areas important to genetic counseling. These include:
- Counseling theory and application
- The principles, applications, and practice of human genetics, clinical genetics, medical genetics, genomics, and other related sciences
- Social, ethical and legal issues as they pertain to the delivery of genetic services
- Methods of genetic testing
- Review of health care delivery systems and principles of public health
- Use of the genetic literature
- Case management skills
- Research methods and biostatistics
- Teaching skills
